Dessert with some rum

I had about 1-2oz of one of Extraordinary Desserts' dessert cakes laced with Myer's rum. I found a general rum cake recipe for a 12-cup cake that listed about 1/2-cup of rum in it (http://www.browardfamp.org/Myers_s_Rum_Cake.pdf). The chocolate cake laced with rum that I had was a "wet cake" that looks like it was soaked in some rum rather than just cooked with rum as one of its ingredients. I'm only 5-weeks pregnant, so I'm worried that the slight amounts of rum (alcohol) I consumed from eating a little of that cake in my first trimester is a red flag for fetal alcohol syndrome.

Re: Dessert with some rum

Thank you for your question.  First of all, we tell all women that there is a background risk for having a baby with a birth defect of 4-5% (everyone’s risk).

Alcohol is a recognized human teratogen that, when consumed in large amounts, has been consistently associated with an increased risk for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), a characteristic pattern of birth defects and development delays.  Full blown FAS is seen in women who drink heavily (5 or more drinks per day) throughout their pregnancy.   However in your case the amount of alcohol that you may have been exposed to when you ate the cake is minimal.  Based on this exposure we would not suggest an increased risk for FAS.
