American Academy Of Pediatrics Honors CTIS Founder

VANCOUVER, B.C., Canada – Dr. Kenneth Lyons Jones, founder and medical director of the California Teratogen Information Service (CTIS) Pregnancy Health Information Line was the proud recipient of the prestigious 2011 David W. Smith Teaching Award.

Dr. Jones is a professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego and chief of the Dysmorphology/Teratology division. Dr. Jones is in clinical service throughout the year and trains fellows in dysmorphology. Teaching goes on virtually every day as he sees patients in clinics and serves as consultant on hospital inpatient services throughout San Diego County.

The award, which was presented to Dr. Jones in mid-March at the American College of Medical Genetics annual meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, is named after Dr. David W. Smith, a former professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington. In 1973, Drs. Smith and Jones first identified Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

“To receive a teaching award of this magnitude, particularly one named for a teacher as renowned as David Smith, is one of the greatest honors that I could receive,” said Dr. Jones.

The award was given by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Genetics and Birth Defects.
